The Dolomites were a Tribal Mestizo Folk band that drew on roots in North America, Mexico, and Japan, weaving together a shifting mix of folk traditions, underground rhythms, and experimental sounds. Led by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Stevhen Koji Baianu, the project was known for its fluid lineups and constantly evolving live performances rather than a fixed, conventional band format.
On stage, Baianu performed accordion and vocals, while local musicians in each city joined on drums, percussion, electronic beats, bass, tuba, violin, and an array of eclectic instruments. This rotating cast gave every appearance a distinct character, making each show a one-of-a-kind collaboration shaped by the place and the people involved.
Since its inception in 1998 in an art-punk house in Portland, Oregon, The Dolomites existed as a roving, intermittent project, later shifting bases between New York City, Japan, and Mexico. Over time, the extended Dolomites “family” grew to include more than 70 members across multiple U.S. cities (including Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, and New York) and countries such as Mexico, Romania, and Japan, ensuring that the music was always in motion and never repeated in quite the same way.
Baianu also carried The Dolomites’ adventurous spirit into collaborations beyond the project, appearing as a guest or touring member with groups such as Balkan Beat Box, Gogol Bordello, Reverend Glasseye, Gypsyliana, Mad Juana, and Yerba Buena, further connecting the band’s story to a wider global music community.
The Dolomites are currently on hiatus and are not performing live or recording new material. Their legacy lives on in past recordings, performances, and collaborations, which stand as a record of a long-running, nomadic experiment in cross-cultural, genre-bending folk music.
泥魔威告（ドロマイツ）は、「地獄よりアンダーグラウンドのバンド」と称されたトライバル・メスティソ系グローバル・ジプシーバンドで、ヨーロッパ、日本、アメリカ、南米などの音楽スタイルを独自にミックスして活動してきました。バンドは1998年、アートパンクハウスが立ち並ぶ米オレゴン州ポートランドで、日本とルーマニアのルーツを持つステファン・皓司・バィアヌ（Stefan Koji Baianu ）によって始動しました。
その後、ポーグスやトム・ウェイツから影響を受けたデビュー作『A Hogshead of Whiskey』、ジプシーやジャズ、物語性のあるサウンドを織り交ぜた『The Medicine Show』EP、ブルックリン録音でジプシー色と日本要素を強めた『Darumanian Chophouse』、そして日本滞在期をまとめた『Japan Years I, II, III』などをリリースし、各地のミュージシャンとのコラボレーションを通じて音楽性を拡張してきました。
ステファンはドロマイツとしての活動に加え、Gogol Bordello や Balkan Beat Box など多くのバンドにゲスト／ツアーメンバーとして参加しながら、エレクトロニック、グローバルベース、バルカン、クンビア、妖怪や民話的世界観などを取り込んだライブパフォーマンスを展開してきました。そうした経験が、ファミコン的チップサウンドとバルカン〜ジプシーを融合させた『8 Bit Balkan』や「Queen of the Game」のリミックス作品群へとつながっています。
現在、ドロマイツは活動休止中であり、新たなライブ公演やレコーディングの予定はありません。これまでの作品と映像、各地でのセッションが、ボーダレスで変幻自在なバンドの軌跡として残されています。
